Councillor Ambika Rebello has tendered her resignation as a councillor with the Town of Port Hedland.

Cr Rebello, who was elected to council in 2023, said it had been an honour and privilege to serve the Hedland community.

“I am deeply grateful for the support I have received and the trust the community placed in me,” she said.

“I have approached this role with integrity and a commitment to placing the interests of our residents at the forefront of every decision.

“However, at this time, I do not believe in good conscience I can continue to serve given the current challenges and circumstances facing the Council.”

Mayor Peter Carter thanked Cr Rebello for her dedication to the role.

“I appreciate Cr Rebello’s reasons for stepping away and thank her for the time and attention she has given to the decision-making process on Council,” he said.

“The Council is continuing to address some of its challenges, having acknowledged the need to improve and work better as a team.”

The Council will continue to conduct its normal business as the remaining five elected members are the minimum required to maintain a quorum.

Tonight’s Ordinary Council Meeting, that starts at 5.30pm, will continue as scheduled.
