The Town of Port Hedland has committed almost $800,000 to ensure Marine Rescue Port Hedland’s new emergency services facility is a step closer to being fully funded.
The $791,620 funding was endorsed by councillors at Wednesday night’s Ordinary Council Meeting and will go towards Stage 3 of the project which includes boat shed additions and site works.
The Town had previously provided in-kind support to the volunteer organisation to assist with landfill disposal costs and the waiving of permit fees.
Mayor Peter Carter said Marine Rescue Port Hedland played a vital role in keeping maritime users safe.
“They have over 40 volunteers and respond to an average of 84 call-outs each year,” Mayor Carter said.
“This new facility will ensure Marine Rescue Port Hedland can continue to keep 200km of our coastline protected for both recreational boaties and professionals out on the water.”
The Town joins a range of funders for the project including DFES, BHP, Pilbara Ports, Roy Hill, Mineral Resources, Fortescue and Horizon Power, among others.
