The Town of Port Hedland's Short Term Recreational Vehicle Overflow Area is located adjacent to the Port Hedland Turf Club on McGregor Street, Port Hedland.
Situated within walking distance of local amenities, the rest stop is a short drive from the Port Hedland Town Centre and multiple tourist attractions.
Conditions of Use
The following conditions apply:
- All stays are to be no more than 72 hours in any 28-day period.
- All RVs have their own on board toilet and shower facilities.
- All waste and grey water is to be retained in the vehicle for disposal at dump points.
- No clothing is to be hung outside to dry.
- Follow 'leave no trace' principles.
- Sites can not be reserved.
- Use waste and recycling facilities provided.
- Tents, camper trailers, mini vans, back packer vans or the like are not permitted.
- No fires permitted.
- No amplified music is permitted.
- All campers must follow reasonable directions from Town of Port Hedland Rangers and Officers.
- Any items left behind will be disposed of as waste by Town of Port Hedland Rangers and/or Town Officers.
- Pets must be kept on a leash and restrained at all times.
- Animal waste must be collected and disposed of to refuse.
- Portable generators are not permitted.
The Short Term RV Overflow Area is monitored by a caretaker appointed by the Town during peak season. Rangers and Town Officers are authorised to issue immediate move-on directions or infringements for non-compliance.

While the Town of Port Hedland RV Overflow Facility allows stays for up to 72 hours (3 days), we recognise that sometimes travel plans don’t go as expected.
To ensure your safety and well-being, we offer exemptions for extended stays under excemptional circumstances.
Exemptions may be considered for the following reasons:
- Medical emergencies
- Health and safety concerns
- Mechanical breakdowns
- Natural disasters
- Weather conditions
Each request will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
RV Overflow Program 2024
Key data was gathered during the Town's 2024 RV Overflow program, with data collected from 646 online surveys from visitors who stayed at the facility in the tourism season from May-October.

RV Overflow camping area an economic boon for Hedland

Visitors to the Town of Port Hedland RV overflow camping area injected an estimated $3.37 million into the Hedland economy in 2024, survey data shows.
That is a 20% increase on the $2.82 million spent during the peak tourist season from May to October in 2023.
The data shows 4661 vehicles stayed at the overflow area in 2024, an increase of 941 vehicles from the previous tourist season.
Mayor Peter Carter said the figures showed the importance of the RV overflow area in McGregor Street, Port Hedland, which was accessible to self-contained RV and caravan travellers.
“Hedland is so much more than just a place to stop for fuel on your way somewhere else,” he said.
“The figures show the RV overflow is an important facility and the economic benefits it provides for local businesses are huge.”
The RV overflow has proven to attract visitors to the region, with 64% of guests saying the camping facility influenced their decision to stop in Hedland. In addition, having the facility open year-round allows Port Hedland to maintain its status as an RV Friendly Town.
The Town received 646 survey responses from visitors who stayed at the facility, with figures showing:
- The average length of stay was 2.2 nights;
- The average spend per travel party was $723;
- 62% were first-time visitors to Port Hedland;
- 64% said the free camping facility influenced their decision to stop in Hedland; and
- Most visitors were from Queensland (23%), WA (22%), New South Wales (19%) and Victoria (18%).
