The Town of Port Hedland has welcomed an election commitment of $22.5 million from WA Labor for a new pool for Hedland.
During a visit to Wanangkura Stadium in South Hedland today, Sports and Recreation Minister David Templeman announced the commitment to a new aquatic centre.
Town of Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the announcement and said the real winner from today’s news was the Hedland community.
“Port Hedland is the powerhouse of the state and national economy with substantial growth continuing to occur within the resources sector,” Mayor Carter said.
“But that economic prosperity cannot be achieved without the Hedland community, which is the driving force of the activity that happens here.
“Our current aquatic facilities are nearing end of life and cost us around $1 million every year in unplanned maintenance costs,” Mayor Carter said.
"We are delighted to see the recognition that Port Hedland is about much more than mining, and that the people that live here are fundamental to the economic success of Western Australia."
Member for Pilbara Kevin Michel said the new Port Hedland Aquatic Centre would be a fantastic addition to the community.
“I am proud that a re-elected Cook Labor Government will provide significant funding to make this exciting project happen for the people of the Pilbara.”
The Town recently decided to fast-track delivering a new aquatic centre by taking it out of the previous South Hedland Integrated Sports Hub and prioritising is as a standalone project.
It is now refining the scope of the project to enable faster delivery.
