Applying for a Building Permit
Every builder and owner builder intending to construct, alter, add to, repair or underpin, demolish or remove an existing building should obtain a permit before commencing that work.
Assessment Timeframes
In accordance with the Building Act 2011, the Town has specific timeframes in which an application is required to be either approved or refused, as listed below. The point at which the specified timeframe commences is considered to be 12am the day after a complete application is received by the Town, including payment of the required fees.

To assist the Town in assessing your application within these timeframes it is important to ensure your application is complete, and that any other required approvals are obtained prior to applying for your building permit. The Town has developed a number of checklists for varying types of common development to assist you in preparing your application.
The Town may also require further information during the course of assessment. In this instance, the applicant is required to provide the requested information within 21 calendar days of a written request being received. Should the information not be received within this period, the Town may refuse your application and retain the fees.
In some circumstances, the above timeframes may be varied by written agreement between the Town and the applicant.

Fees And Charges 2023-2024
Fees and levies for applications are payable at time of lodgement. You can determine your application fees by following the Building Fees & Charges link below. Payments can be made by cash, cheque, credit card or bank transfer. Fees will be emailed to the applicant with payment instructions once all applicable documents are received for the application/information requests.
