The Town has received an application from Pilbara Ports for proposed new street names for Spoilbank Marina. Details of the proposal include:

      1. Haulage Road name proposed to be changed to Marina Rise
      2. Spoilbank Access Road proposed to be changed to Spoilbank Quays
      3. Yacht Club Access Road proposed to be changed to Yacht Club Lane

The applicant has provided the following justification for the names:

      1. The Haulage Road has already had Marina Road approved however; it is proposed to change to Marina Rise as the road rises as you approach the Marina.
      2. The main access road into Spoilbank is proposed to be Spoilbank, following the name it is known for in town following by 'Quays', as the roadway leading to a landing place alongside or projecting into the water.
      3. The Port Hedland Yacht Club is situated on this street, which is significant in representing a unique way of life associated with Port Hedland. Constructed in 2010, the yacht club enjoys an elevated position overlooking the ocean and is listed as a place of cultural heritage significance on the Town of Port Hedland Heritage Inventory. The Spoilbank Marina Precinct was constructed around retention of the yacht club, and the street name “Yacht Club Lane” reflects both a maritime theme and represents the history of the site in which the street is located.

      Land Administration Act 1997

Application for Road Naming – Airport Precinct

The Town has received applications from Hedland Men’s Shed and Port Hedland International Airport for proposed new street names for the Airport Precinct following the Great Northern Highway Realignment.

       Details of the proposal include:

Arif Close – Julie Arif was a dedicated and active member of our community, serving on various committees, including the Hedland Men’s Shed, and previously holding a tenure as a council member. Her contributions to the town were significant and naming this street after her would be a fitting tribute to her legacy.

Dixon Drive – "Dixon" or "Dixons" named after the caravan park, shop and roadhouse originally constructed in the late 1960s and only changing name in the 1990s after being sold. The roadhouse and accommodation on Lot 2 & 3 are still referred to as Dixon's by long term locals and visitors who fondly remember the caravan park and its owner, the late Cecil John Dixon (8 Oct 1931 to 16 Jan 2021).

John Adams Road - In 1942 World War II saw three air raids on Port Hedland by Japanese planes. “Betty” bombers unleashed a tirade of 60kg bombs plus anti-personal and incendiary bombs. Sadly, there was one casualty, 19 year old Private John Adams, a young infantryman based at the airfield.

Flyboy Road – A group of ‘dashing’ aviators, coined ‘dare devils’ used the old Port Hedland racecourse aerodrome during the mid 1930’s. These included Len Taplin, Major Brearley, Bertie Heath, Keith Anderson, Eric Chater, Jimmy Woods and Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and his famous Southern Cross tri-motor aircraft.

The proposed roads are located here
