The Town of Port Hedland has won the National Community Wellbeing and Diversity Award from the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) for the South Hedland Place Plan and Youth Mural Project.
The Town was awarded the WA Community Wellbeing and Diversity Award by PIA for the project in 2023 and on Wednesday night took out the National gong.
The Place Plan, which was designed to empower young people to be key decision makers, culminated in the South Hedland Road mural, which was an opportunity to express the Hedland community’s connection to country.
Judges praised the project’s involvement of youth in the co-design and co-delivery of the mural.
"Recognising our regional and marginalised communities have an outflow of young people, this project is considered an excellent demonstration of working with youth and placing them at the centre of community and decision making, to build meaningful civic engagement," the judges said.
The project was a collaborative effort with the Town, RAC, Town Team Movement and Shire of Trayning.
