In a strong show of commitment to environmental sustainability, BHP has kindly donated $100,000 to the Town of Port Hedland to support tree replenishment efforts following Tropical Cyclone (TC) Zelia.

TC Zelia crossed the Port Hedland coast on 14 February and caused a significant number of trees to be uprooted and damaged across the Town and nearby regional communities.

The funding will go directly towards replanting native trees in key local areas impacted by the cyclone, ensuring the ecosystem can recover and flourish.

BHP WAIO Asset President, Tim Day emphasised the importance of restoring green spaces to contribute to the town’s long-term environmental recovery.

“While Port Hedland was spared the worst of Tropical Cyclone Zelia, this weather event had a major impact on the town’s treescape. There’s a massive effort underway to clear fallen trees and debris, and ensure local streets are safe again.”

“Port Hedland is of huge significance to us, and its success belongs to everyone. We’re looking forward to partnering with the Town of Port Hedland to fast-track the recovery and restoration of green spaces.” said Mr Day.

Town of Port Hedland Mayor, Peter Carter welcomed the donation and support from BHP, and said he was proud of how the community and stakeholders were coming together in recovery efforts.

“This funding from BHP will make a significant difference in our town’s environmental recovery.”

“Investing in tree replenishment not only enhances our public spaces, but also ensures our town remains a vibrant place for all,” Mayor Peter Carter said.
