The Town of Port Hedland has welcomed an election commitment of $22.5 million from the WA Liberals to help fund a new pool in Hedland.
The Town recently decided to fast-track delivering a new aquatic centre by taking it out of the previous South Hedland Integrated Sports Hub project and prioritising is as a standalone project.
Mayor Peter Carter said the commitment from the WA Liberals was testament to the importance of a new aquatic facility in Hedland.
“A new pool will have a hugely positive impact for our community, so it is terrific the WA Liberals see the benefit and are willing to invest $22.5 million to the project if elected in March,” Mayor Carter said.
“The South Hedland Aquatic Centre and the Gratwick Aquatic Centre are both more than 50-years-old and are nearing end-of life.
“The required maintenance just to keep these pools open costs around $1 million every single year.”
The Town is currently working to identify a suitable site for the pool and looking at the scope of the project to support faster delivery.
“The Town of Port Hedland and its ratepayers cannot fund a project like this alone,” Mayor Carter said.
“We need the support of both industry and government to make this a reality.”
WA Liberals leader Libby Mettam, Mining and Pastoral Region MLC Neil Thomson and candidate for Pilbara Amanda Kailis joined Town executive staff at South Hedland Aquatic Centre for the announcement.
