Town of Port Hedland councillors have recommended the Regional Joint Development Assessment Panel approves a $51 million nine-storey residential development in South Hedland.
The proposed development on Colebatch Way includes 55 one-bedroom and 53 two-bedroom units along with restaurants, café and other shops on the ground floor, adjacent communal open space with playground as well as a rooftop communal open space with outdoor pool and bar.
At December’s meeting on Wednesday night, councillors voted unanimously to recommend the development be approved.
Mayor Peter Carter said the development was an exciting prospect for Hedland.
“Having an apartment block of this magnitude so close to the Town square and other amenities will help lift the vibrancy of South Hedland,” he said.
“The Town has made it a priority to ensure we encourage modern, attractive residential housing options to attract newcomers to our region.
“The added components like a restaurant, café, gym, rooftop bar and other retail shops provide more options for residents as well as an economic boost.”
Mayor Carter said access to affordable housing remained a key issue in Hedland and proposals such as the Azzura Square development would help in providing solutions.
“The Town has also committed $40 million to address some of the challenges we have in housing,” he said.
