Dual names for community centre

Town of Port Hedland councillors have endorsed dual naming of the new community centre in Port Hedland.

At Wednesday night’s Ordinary Council Meeting, the dual name of Milpaku Kuma/Port Hedland Community Centre was endorsed.

Mayor Peter Carter said the council had consulted with Kariyarra Aboriginal Corporation to select an Aboriginal name for the facility.

“Milpaku Kuma means ‘coming together’ and it was chosen because the facility will be a gathering place for the community in years to come,” Mayor Carter said.

“As well as being utilised for sporting and other functions, it will also become an emergency shelter for Port Hedland.

“Port Hedland Community Centre was an obvious choice for the European name given it describes exactly what this facility will be – a centre for the whole community to utilise.”

Construction of the centre is nearing completion and will be a function and storage space for multiple community organisations, including the Port Hedland Turf Club.

It will be able to cater for 200 people as an emergency shelter.

“The centre will be a key community asset and is another example of the Town’s commitment to providing quality facilities to improve liveability,” Mayor Carter said.

“The Town felt it was important to recognise our district’s cultural heritage when naming this centre, which is why we have endorsed a dual-naming.”
