The Town of Port Hedland will bring an awe-inspiring First Nations storytelling drone show to the Hedland skies in 2025 as part of its winter events season.
At its 5 February meeting, the Town of Port Hedland Council confirmed the First Lights Drone Show, an innovative and immersive experience, fully funded by sponsorships.
This major event will showcase 180 drones, specialist 3D animation, and a cinematic soundscape, providing Traditional Owners the opportunity to share the story of the Pilbara and Port Hedland.
The event at Spoilbank Marina will also feature live music, traditional dancing, food trucks, and family-friendly activities, with more details to be announced later this year.
Mayor Peter Carter expressed excitement about introducing this unique event to Hedland.
“This show is something completely new for our community. It combines lights, sound, and First Nations storytelling in a way that will captivate audiences,” Mayor Carter said.
Town of Port Hedland’s Manager of Events, Arts, and Culture, David Snyder, highlighted the importance of evolving the Town’s winter event programming.
“Every year, we aim to create a culturally inclusive program of high-quality events that enhance the liveability and loveability of Hedland."
“In 2024, nearly 25,000 people attended our winter events.” Mr. Snyder said.
In November 2024, the Council endorsed a decision to pause the Odyssea Music & Arts Journey in 2025 to reassess the community’s needs and wants surrounding winter events.
“This decision allows us to better serve the community. As a result, Odyssea Music & Arts Journey will not go ahead in 2025,” Mayor Carter said.
Instead, 2025 will be a year of engagement, with the Town of Port Hedland reaching out to the community through a series of consultation events.
“The Town will reach out to ask the community what they truly want from a major winter event. Keep an eye on the Town social media and website for your chance to have your say,” Mayor Carter added.
While Odyssea takes a hiatus, the First Lights Drone Show will be the highlight of the 2025 winter season.
The Town is grateful for the support of BHP and a public art contribution from APA Group, ensuring this event remains free for all to enjoy
