Port Hedland has been selected as a finalist in this year’s Tidy Towns Sustainable Community Awards, an initiative from the Keep Australia Beautiful Council.

The annual awards recognise regional and remote communities for their efforts in litter prevention, sustainable projects, and positive environmental outcomes.

Hedland is a finalist in five of the nine categories:

  • Young Legends: Billie Rowles
  • Environmental Education: Captain Clean-up
  • Heritage & Culture: Historical Society's Commemoration of Local History
  • Community Containers for Change
  • Waste Management: Streaming Sustainability

The awards allow regional towns to showcase and celebrate their achievements about how they are protecting the environment.

Local environmental organisation Care for Hedland facilitated the award nominations, collaborating with the Town, PHLAGS+, the Port Hedland Historical Society, and two rising star local juniors.

Mayor Peter Carter said the nominations reflected the hard work of the community, the Town, and organisations like Care for Hedland.

“We all play an important role in doing the right thing for a sustainable future and minimising our environmental footprint. It’s fantastic Hedland can be recognised for these awards, and it wouldn’t be possible without the collaborative effort our community puts in.”

The Town has recently endorsed an Environmental Sustainability Strategy that details a long-term plan to protect our environment while supporting social and economic growth.

Mayor Peter Carter said Hedland’s future and sustainability outcomes remain at the forefront of our approaches to improve environmental outcomes.

“Priorities within our Environmental Sustainability Strategy focus on greening our town while developing more sustainable and waste management practices.”

Chairperson of Care for Hedland Environmental Association, Jules Prins said “It’s fantastic Hedland and our community can be recognised in these awards. It shows how simple, sustainable choices can lead to a positive impact for the future.”

The awards will be held in Perth on Friday 24 November.
