Hedland celebrates local sporting heroes at annual awards night

Hedland’s brightest sporting talents were celebrated at the 2024 Town of Port Hedland and BHP Community Sports Awards on Friday night.

A record number of more than 90 entries were received for the nine categories, with winners announced at a gala event at Rays which featured special guest speaker, three-time Olympic hockey player Jane Claxton.

Mayor Peter Carter said the annual awards night was a way to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of sportspeople, officials and volunteers.

“In many ways, sport is the backbone of regional communities like Hedland,” Mayor Carter said.

“It brings people together – giving newcomers to town social connections.

“I congratulate all the winners and nominees tonight. We have so many talented sportspeople but also so many dedicated volunteers who work behind the scenes.”

Award winners were:

  • Pilbara Ports Sporting Group of the Year: Port Hedland Game Fishing Club
  • The Heddy Hotel - Rays Service to Sport: Relma Bule-Turner
  • Horizon Power Volunteer of the Year: Laura Hawes
  • BHP Coach of the Year: Jan Breddy
  • Domino’s Umpire/Official of the Year: Braydon Barr
  • Domino’s Sportswoman of the Year: Amanda Keller
  • Town of Port Hedland Sportsman of the Year: Raymond Cowen
  • ITOCHU Minerals and Energy of Australia Junior Sportsman of the Year: Brooklyn Bennett
  • ITOCHU Minerals and Energy of Australia Junior Sportswoman of the Year: Mia Coppin

The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries collated nominations from each Pilbara Local Government Sports Awards and the winners of the 2024 Pilbara Regional Sports Awards were also presented on the night.

The 2024 Pilbara Regional Sports Awards from Hedland include:

  • Sportsperson of the Year: Amanda Keller
  • Junior Sportsperson of the Year: Brooklyn Bennett

“These awards are terrific recognition for the hard work Amanda and Brooklyn have put into their sports, and I congratulate them on the Pilbara awards,” Mayor Carter said.

The awards are supported by Principal Partner BHP, alongside the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and sponsors Pilbara Ports, Domino’s, Horizon Power, ITOCHU Minerals and Energy of Australia and The Heddy Hotel – Rays.
