Please note, this content discusses family and domestic violence.

The Hedland community is invited to join forces at the 2024 Hedland Says No to Family Violence event to foster community support, promote safety and drive change.

Hosted by the Hedland Family Violence Action Group (HFVAG), the event takes place on Wednesday 8 May at South Hedland Town Square, featuring a march, presentations and activities.

The HFVAG is a grassroots collective of local stakeholders that supports collaboration and promotes attitudes and behaviours that prevent and combat family and domestic violence.

Mayor Peter Carter emphasised that this event not only condemns family violence but also cultivates community engagement and cohesion.

"This is a unified stand against family violence. The Town is committed to supporting events that build a resilient, connected community with safety as our cornerstone," Mayor Carter said.

“Family and domestic violence impacts the whole of our community – it is up to all of us to address attitudes, encourage community leadership and demand an end to gender-based violence."

"The event represents the Hedland community coming together to support survivors of family and domestic violence, while also providing a platform to raise awareness of the resources and services available.”

In 2024, statistics show an Australian woman is killed due to gendered violence every four days. Recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals a 13 per cent rise in family and domestic violence-related offenses in Western Australia from 2022 to 2023.

"Addressing this issue requires a multi-faceted approach, including education, support services, and community involvement - events like this are crucial in preventing, addressing, and responding to family violence.

"The Town is dedicated to working with all stakeholders and community members to enhance safety, respect and community wellbeing."

The 2024 Hedland Says No to Family Violence event is made possible by the collective effort of all HFVAG members and is supported by the Town of Port Hedland alongside sponsors BHP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue, Hedland Women’s Refuge, Relationships Australia WA and DV Assist.
