New Arts and Culture Plan sets the stage for Hedland's creative future

The Town of Port Hedland Council has adopted a refreshed plan for supporting arts and culture in Hedland, building on momentum gained in recent years.

Council adopted the Arts and Culture Plan 2023-27 (the Plan) at the Ordinary Council Meeting last night, to facilitate an even more liveable and loveable Hedland for locals and tourists alike to live, work, play and experience.

The Plan looks to remove barriers for touring musicians and artists, develop more homegrown talent, make use of high-quality public spaces, and provide more creative education pathways for young people.

A social impact framework will also be developed in the second year to measure how community expectations are being met, and to better understand the impact for residents, businesses and visitors.

Town of Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter said the Plan sets a strong strategic vision to continue working with Hedland’s creative and cultural sectors to increase community participation, inclusivity and visitor engagement.

“Hedland is home to a calendar of cultural performances, events, film screenings, visual arts programming and a range of talented arts and cultural organisations.

“This refreshed plan builds on the successful delivery of key outcomes including the planning of a new Sports and Arts precinct in South Hedland, cultural learning opportunities for young people and upskilling local community groups.”

The Plan further acknowledges and embraces the contribution and influence of First Nations peoples on Hedland’s unique identity and includes plans to further develop partnerships with Aboriginal and multicultural communities.

“The Town thanks the valuable input from the community and local arts and cultural organisations – the insights shared underpin how important culture and arts are for the community,” Mayor Carter said.

“Our identity stems from arts and culture, bringing a sense of pride and belonging for our community - this Plan not only supports our community, but also promotes tourism and economic development, making Hedland a vibrant place to live and work.

“The Town looks forward to seeing the Plan be put into action, to provide more opportunities to celebrate our unique culture, arts, and Pilbara way of life.”
