The Town of Port Hedland’s undercover skatepark project received plaudits at the Master Builders WA Kimberley-Pilbara Building Awards last weekend.

The Town’s project team joined contractors MG Group and Norda Architects for the awards in Broome, with the state-of-the-art $7.2 million South Hedland skatepark’s transformational shade structure project honoured.

MG Group won the ‘Best Civil Engineering Works $5-$10M’ category for its high-quality work on the project. This included the large-scale size of the roof, the need for it to withstand a cyclone and the engineering required to have minimal impact on the existing skatepark.

The project also won the ‘Construction on a Challenging Site’ award while MG Group’s Site Supervisor, Luke McElhinney, won the award for ‘Site Manager of the Year’.

In addition, the Town won the ‘Best Office Building $5-$10M’ for its Infrastructure Operations Centre in Wedgefield, which was also a finalist in the ‘Regional Project of the Year’ category.

Mayor Peter Carter congratulated the Town and its contractors for their extensive efforts on large-scale projects.

“It’s great to be recognised for the display of outstanding commitment to quality and hard work our team and our contractors put into these projects,” Mayor Carter said.

“These projects support the growth and development of the Hedland community by providing quality amenities and facilities.”
