The Town of Port Hedland has extended the public consultation period for its turtle nesting habitat protection measures, allowing the community more time to provide valuable feedback.
The proposals, which aim to safeguard the local Flatback turtle population during nesting and hatching season, includes restricting beach access on the Spoilbank eastern reserve and temporarily banning dogs on nesting beaches.
Originally set to close on 22 November, the consultation period will now run until Friday 17 January 2025, following significant community interest.
Manager Environmental Services, Michael Cuvalo emphasised the importance of public input in shaping effective and balanced environmental measures.
“We’ve had outstanding engagement from our community so far and want to ensure everyone has the opportunity to have their say,” he said.
“Protecting our local Flatback turtle population is a shared responsibility and the feedback we receive will play a critical role in shaping the final recommendations.”
The council received more than 50 submissions in the initial consultation period.
Feedback from the submissions will help shape the final recommendations to be put to councillors at an Ordinary Council Meeting in early 2025.
