Town launches Disaster Dashboard

Published on Monday, 9 October 2023 at 11:30:08 AM

The Town of Port Hedland has launched an online portal to give the community access to vital information needed during emergencies such as cyclones.

 The Disaster Dashboard is a one-stop-shop online portal that includes tools and information including:

  • interactive maps;
  • weather warnings;
  • road closures;
  • utilities outages;
  • weather observations and warnings;
  • emergency contact numbers
  • links to information vital to preparing for and staying safe during cyclones;
  • notifications opt-ins;
  • social media feeds; and
  • fire danger ratings.

 The dashboard can be accessed at disaster.porthedland.wa.gov.au

 Mayor Peter Carter said the community looked to the Town for information during emergencies despite it not being the lead agency.

 “The Pilbara coast between Broome and Exmouth is the most cyclone-prone in Australia, and with Port Hedland's transient population it is crucial people are aware of the risks of cyclones,” Mayor Carter said.

“The Disaster Dashboard is a wonderful tool that gives people access to vital information to stay safe and be informed during emergencies – especially in cyclones.”

Mayor Carter said the Town was mailing an information flyer and fridge magnet – which includes a QR code link to the dashboard – to every household in the Town of Port Hedland LGA.

“We are confident the Disaster Dashboard will be well utilised by the community during cyclones and other emergencies, as well as just to gain information about road closures or weather warnings,” Mayor Carter said.

The dashboard was launched on 9 October to coincide with the Bureau of Meteorology’s cyclone season forecast held at the Civic Centre.
