The Hedland Youth Advisory Council used the opening of Port Hedland’s $187.5 million Spoilbank Marina as a significant platform to increase awareness of how individuals, families and communities can use bubbles to reduce the harmful impact of balloons and protect Australian marine life.
As part of this initiative, the young leaders met with the Western Australia Premier Roger Cook to discuss issues and initiatives important to them, including protecting wildlife and addressing heat vulnerability in the Pilbara.
To support this important environmental message, the group held a series of presentations at Hedland Senior High School based on the work of Zoos Victoria’s When Balloons Fly Seabirds Die initiative.
These presentations reached 500 students and 30 teachers who learnt about this important initiative while encouraging community participation of the much-awaited Spoilbank Marina opening event.
This work was further demonstrated by young leaders facilitating an interactive workshop for about 380 community members to learn about how harmful balloons are to the environment, while providing hands-on giant bubble-blowing experiences within the community.
