Young Hedlanders lined up for leadership camp

Fifteen young people from Hedland will head to Dampier on an all-expenses-paid Leadership Camp thanks to an initiative of the Hedland Youth Advisory Council.

The Hedland Youth Advisory Council has partnered with not-for-profit organisation Millennium Kids to deliver an inaugural leadership camp from 11-13 October. Young thinkers, leaders, and change makers from Hedland will spend three days engaging in personal development experiences that support leadership capabilities.

Town of Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter said it was positive to see the difference being made by the Youth Advisory Council so soon after its establishment.

“The Town of Port Hedland’s Youth Advisory Council was established in 2023 to give young people a voice, and a platform, to advocate for a bright and promising future,” Mayor Carter said.

“This dedicated group of individuals has come together to contribute to the planning of youth activities, services and projects. They have also developed a bespoke brand that represents its commitments and aspirations".

Mayor Carter said the partnership with Millennium Kids was another great milestone for this group of emerging leaders.

“Millennium Kids aims to empower young people to take action on the issues they care about. The partnership with the Youth Advisory Council has supported the selection of fifteen young Hedlanders who will benefit from a range of leadership development activities over three days,” Mayor Carter said.

“The Town is proud to support this initiative to provide this unique opportunity free of charge to these promising individuals.”

The Camp will include leadership skills and games, On-Country experiences, raft building, working with indigenous artist Marli Ryan and developing ideas for an aspirational Hedland future.
