What is the ‘It’s our place’ project all about?

The project is a multi-phase initiative designed to showcase Port Hedland’s unique identity, enhance its reputation, and drive economic and community growth. Over the next 18 months, the project will follow these key milestones:

Discovery Phase – research and stakeholder engagement to gather insights from residents, businesses, and visitors, ensuring the project truly reflects Port Hedland’s character and opportunities.

Place Brand Development – creation of a compelling brand identity that captures what makes Port Hedland special and resonates with key audiences, including residents, tourists, and investors.

Strategic Plans for Growth – development of essential plans, including:

  • A Destination Management Plan to boost tourism and visitor experiences.
  • An Investment Facilitation Plan to attract businesses and economic opportunities.
  • A Resident Attraction & Retention Plan to encourage long-term community growth.

Marketing & Digital Presence – launch of a marketing plan and a dedicated website to promote Port Hedland as a top destination to live, visit, and invest. This will transform the current Port Hedland Visitor Centre website.

Understanding the 'It's our place' project

What is a place brand?

A place brand is the unique identity and reputation of a town, city, or region. It shapes how people—both locals and visitors—perceive and experience a place. More than just a logo or tagline, a place brand captures the character, values, and aspirations of a community.

A strong place brand helps:
Boost tourism and visitation – Showcasing unique attractions, culture, and experiences.
Attract investment and business – Highlighting why our town is a great place to start or grow a business.
Foster community pride – Strengthening local identity and encouraging a sense of belonging.

By celebrating our strengths and unique qualities, the place brand ensures Port Hedland is recognised, valued, and positioned for long-term success.

What is a Destination Management Plan?

A Destination Management Plan outlines strategies to enhance Port Hedland as a vibrant tourism destination, ensuring a sustainable and memorable visitor experience. It focuses on improving attractions, events, infrastructure, and services to support tourism growth while benefiting the local community.

What is an Investment Facilitation Plan?

An Investment Facilitation Plan helps attract and support businesses and investors by identifying opportunities, streamlining processes, and promoting Port Hedland as a great place to invest. It aims to strengthen the local economy by encouraging sustainable business growth and development.

What is a Resident Attraction & Retention Plan?

A Resident Attraction & Retention Plan focuses on making Port Hedland a more appealing place to live and work. It includes strategies to attract new residents, improve liveability, and support long-term community growth by addressing housing, lifestyle, employment, and social opportunities.

Together, these plans work alongside the place brand to build a stronger, more connected, and thriving Port Hedland for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
