The impact of a tropical cyclone can be devastating. Find our below what to expect after a cyclone has passed.

After A cyclone

Please be aware that there may be debris or other hazards still present even after the all-clear has been given by authorities.

Flood waters could clog storm water systems, and residents need to be aware of the dangers or playing in or around storm drains, ditches, ravines or culverts as it is very easy to be washed away by fast-moving water.

Floods can cause severe damage and disruptions to households and communities.

Never walk, swim or play in floodwaters as they are dangerous and unpredictable. Flood waters can also contain raw sewage and contaminants, conduct electricity, and can mask hidden hazards.

Mosquito awareness

Following the significant rainfall from Ex-Tropical Cyclones Sean and Zelia, the Town of Port Hedland is actively working to control the surge in mosquito numbers across the region.

In response, the Town has purchased sachets of Coopex, an effective residual pesticide, to support residents in managing mosquitoes around their homes.

The sachets will be provided free of charge to residents for residential use only. Commercial businesses are encouraged to engage a licensed pest controller for treatments on commercial properties. More info on that here.

We also recommend following these simple steps to protect yourself, and your family from mosquito bites:

  • Cover Up – wear long, loose-fitting, light coloured clothing, covering as much of the body as you can.
  • Repel – apply an effective insect repellent containing DEET (diethyltoluamide), picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE, also known as PMD) evenly to exposed skin.
  • Clean Up – remove, empty or cover water-holding containers. Keep your grass short to stop mosquitoes hanging around your home

While the Town will make make every effort to reduce mosquito numbers, mosquitoes cannot be fully eradicated, and there will always be some mosquito population. We urge everyone to take the necessary actions to protect themselves and their family from mosquito bites.
