Representatives from the Bureau of Meteorology and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA delivered the 2024/25 Cyclone and Seasonal Briefing this week at the Civic Centre. The session focused on the new Australian Warning System alerts, and how they will be applied during a cyclone
Port Hedland residents are encouraged to Be Aware and Be Prepared for the upcoming cyclone season, especially with the new Australian Warning System (AWS) that has come into effect.
Preseason Preparation:
- Clear your residence or work area of unwanted materials and rubbish.
- Trim trees of excess height and growth to enable them to withstand high winds.
- Clear drains of rubbish or obstructions.
- Prepare or review your Family Cyclone Plan.
- Prepare and have available your family emergency kit including adequate drinking water containers and medications to last for up to 2 weeks.
- Decide where best to shelter your pets.
- Organise tie-down areas and obtain tie-down equipment for securing caravans, boats, trailers, and other large loose or bulky items.
Cyclone season in Hedland summary predicted by DFES and BoM
- Predictions for cyclones: The Northwest Region may expect:
- A later start to the wet season
- They are forecasting a relatively average season with 5 cyclones in the region and the likelihood of 2 crossing land, one of which may be severe (Cat 3 or above)
- Predications for rainfall: Average/lower than average until November with possibility of slightly above average Nov to Jan
- Predictions for weather: Very high chance of extreme heat conditions, with significantly higher than average temperatures this summer.
