The annual Indigenous Literacy Day event at South Hedland Library will be a fun and free-flowing morning of activities and community connections as First Nations’ stories, culture, and languages are celebrated.
Held under the shady trees at South Hedland Library on Wednesday 4 September, the event will consist of craft and sensory activities, music and entertainment, a free BBQ, information stallholders, and free books.
Last year’s event hosted over 70 people including local community members, day-care centres, children from remote community schools, and Town staff.
Mayor Peter Carter said events like this helped bridge the gap in literacy and education, promoting equal opportunities for Indigenous children.
“For children to reach their full potential, strong literacy skills are crucial, so it’s important we can deliver inclusive events like this to help build a happy, healthy, and liveable community”, he said.
"The Town is dedicated to providing events that support community access to literacy, acknowledging the need to reach remote areas and honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.”
Indigenous Literacy Day is a national event of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation that aims to emphasise the importance of preserving Indigenous languages and stories, which are crucial for maintaining cultural identity and heritage.
