Hedlanders take home safety and security seriously

Almost 90 homes have been fitted with additional safety and security measures thanks to the Town of Port Hedland’s Home Safety and Security Rebate.

The rebate supports Hedland residents to enhance the safety and security of homes by part-funding eligible products such as security cameras, home alarm systems, sensor lights and security screens and deadlocks.

Throughout 2024 there have been 87 successful applications for the rebate, with the Town of Port Hedland funding almost $32,000 worth of additional safety and security measures.

Mayor Peter Carter said it was a fabulous result and demonstrated the Hedland community understood everyone played a role in community safety.

“Burglary and vehicle theft accounts for about 10 per cent of crime in Hedland, affecting a very small percentage of our community. However, the impacts can be significant for the victims of those crimes,” Mayor Carter said.

“While crime is unfortunately part of every regional community, Hedland’s rate of crime is on par with other Pilbara towns and 60 per cent lower than Kununurra.

“I believe a large part of helping keep a lid on crime in our community is people doing simple but important things like installing safety and security measures through this rebate scheme.”

The rebate scheme has also had positive impacts for local businesses, with more than $126,000 tied to the rebate scheme spent with local suppliers in 2024.

In addition, more than 80 Hedland locations have been added to the WA Police’s database of security cameras, helping to develop a network of CCTV cameras and enabling a more effective response to incidents.

Mayor Carter urged Hedlanders to take simple measures to reduce crime over the festive season.

“Little things like securely locking vehicles and properties and keeping valuables out of sight go a long way to reducing crime – these are things that we should all be doing on a daily basis.”
