Maintenance and improvement works on the South Hedland Aquatic Centre are on track, with a grand re-opening party planned for Australia Day 2018.
In September 2016, due to a major water quality non-compliance issues and public safety risks, the Aquatic Centre was closed to allow for the review and upgrade of the pool filtration.
The tender for works was awarded at a Special Council Meeting in October to a highly experienced pool contractor. The renewal works underway will rectify all of the issues with the pool’s piping, filtration and pumps to comply with public safety and the general performance of the mechanical equipment.
Work around the pools and the general area have included improvements to the shade and pergola areas, pavement repairs, the installation of new lighting.
“We acknowledge that this has been an inconvenience for local people and our sporting groups and we’d like to thank the community for their patience while the pool has undergone this work,” said Town of Port Hedland Mayor Camilo Blanco.
“We are now looking forward to opening the updated facility and providing an easily accessible aquatic experience for the people in South Hedland.”
“The project has experienced its share of challenges, and the team has done an excellent job in addressing every challenge and working with the wider community to ensure the South Hedland Aquatic Centre is the best facility we can provide for our residents.”
The South Hedland Aquatic Centre is scheduled to re-open to the public early in January, with a Family Fun Day scheduled for Australia Day. Community members are encouraged to like the Town of Port Hedland’s Facebook page for the latest updates.
