A record amount of recyclable goods has been diverted from the South Hedland Landfill in the 2023-24 financial year.

The Town of Port Hedland can confirm 136.12 tonnes of tyres were recycled through TyreCycle in the last financial year.

This included 76.07 tonnes of commercial tyres, 13.52 tonnes of residential tyres and 46.53 tonnes of commercial and residential tyres from 2022-23 financial year.

In addition, 1.923 tonnes of commercial and residential lithium ion batteries have been collected at the landfill between February and June this year for recycling at Ecobatt.

Also in the 2023-24 financial year, 36.66 tonnes of car batteries and 711.9 tonnes of scrap metal were recycled from the landfill.

In the same financial year 9.754 tonnes of E-Waste was diverted from South Hedland Landfill for recycling at Total Green Recycling. This was made up of 8.865 tonnes of TVs and 0.889 tonnes of other IT equipment.

Mayor Peter Carter said reducing waste to landfill was a core objective of the Town’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2022-2027 and Waste Management Strategy 2022-2027.

“In recent times the Town has run an education campaign on the dangers of incorrectly disposing of batteries in household waste, because they cause fires at the landfill,” Mayor Carter said.

“So it’s terrific to see so many people taking advantage of battery recycling disposal points at the landfill and other Town facilities.

“The efforts of all the staff at the South Hedland Landfill should be commended for their efforts in helping reduce waste to landfill through these recycling schemes.”
