Items of note from the Town of Port Hedland Ordinary Council Meeting held on 13 December.
BY-ELECTION CALLED
An extraordinary election will be held on 8 March, 2024, to replace Cr David Eckhart.
The Town sought advice from the Western Australian Electoral Commissioner about its options to replace Cr Eckhart, who resigned in November, with a by-election being the only option.
On Wednesday night, councillors voted to endorse the extraordinary election, via postal vote, and allocated $73,750 to fund it.
GETTING ACTIVE
The Town’s blueprint for future investment in its footpath, shared path and pedestrian access way network across Hedland was endorsed.
The Active Transport Strategy outlines gaps in the network across the Town and the future needs for safe, well-designed and connected paths and accessways.
Active transport includes modes of transport that require physical activity such as walking, cycling, scooting and using a wheelchair.
The Strategy promotes health and wellbeing through different active transport modes, improving liveability in Hedland.
WAYPOINT SUPPORT
Councillors have recommended the Regional Joint Development Assessment Panel approve an application to expand Waypoint Village worker accommodation village near the airport.
The proposed expansion includes 301 new accommodation rooms; recreation, gym/fitness facilities; kitchen/diner, beer garden and tavern area; laundry and barbecue areas, as well as carparking and landscaping.
HEALTH FUNDING
The Town of Port Hedland is playing its part in trying to help attract healthcare services by approving a funding application from Spectrum Health to establish a medical clinic to Hedland.
Councillors endorsed $60,000 in conditional funding to the healthcare provider through the Town’s Economic Development and Diversification Fund.
Spectrum Health is a WA-based provider with 45 medical clinics across Perth and regional WA.
It intends to use its established pathways to recruit overseas-based GPs to Hedland, with a view of opening a new clinic in March 2024.
