Town delivers a balanced approach to turtle conservation

The Town of Port Hedland has adjusted its proposed Flatback turtle protection measures to ensure continued community access to Spoilbank and turtle nesting beaches.

At Wednesday night’s Ordinary Council Meeting, councillors endorsed a recommendation against a permanent vehicle ban on the Eastern side of Spoilbank, and a seasonal ban on dogs during turtle nesting season.

Instead, the Town will embark on an education campaign installing signage at foreshore entrances to remind residents of their responsibilities during nesting season. This will include keeping dogs on a leash at all times and ensuring vehicle drivers remain mindful of the limited number of nesting turtles on the Spoilbank reserve.

The decision reflects the valuable insights shared by the community during a consultation period between November 2024 and January this year, with over 50 submissions received.

Many of the submissions highlighted concerns the restrictions would impact beach accessibility and enjoyment, with respondents expressing a strong preference for alternative approaches to turtle conservation.

Manager Environmental Services, Michael Cuvalo said the clarity of community feedback not only guided the Council’s decision but also reinforced the importance of consultation when considering proposals of this nature.

“The feedback we received has been instrumental in shaping our approach,” said Mr Cuvalo.

“It’s clear that our community values their beaches and wants to be part of the solution, rather than facing prohibitions. This process demonstrates why it’s so important for residents to have their say on matters that affect them."

“We sincerely thank everyone who took the time to share their thoughts. Your voice matters, and it’s through this kind of engagement that we can make informed, balanced decisions."
